Hours:
This is a full-time, professional position based in Washington, DC that reports directly to the President and Chief Executive Officer.
Salary:

Better Markets is the leading non-profit, non-partisan, and independent organization in Washington DC fighting for a financial system that supports the real productive economy, jobs and growth.  It was founded in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis to promote the public interest in the financial markets, support the financial reform of Wall Street, and make our financial system work for all Americans again.  We pursue these goals through a variety of advocacy and activities, including throughout the rulemaking process at all the financial regulators, in-depth research reports, litigation in the federal courts, and through all mainstream and social media channels.  

Responsibilities:

We are seeking an experienced leader to manage, maintain, cultivate and expand its substantial communications operations. This includes print, online, radio, TV and social media. 

 

The Director of Communications and Public Relations will provide vision and leadership in developing and implementing a creative, proactive and comprehensive communications strategy across all platforms to engage and inform the public on financial reform issues.  He or she will also be responsible for the day-to-day and long-term media operations for Better Markets.

 

The Communications Director will be responsible for deepening and broadening Better Markets’ reach to media, policy makers, opinion leaders, the public and other influencers. Along with supervising and managing a digital media strategist, he/she will manage the daily and long-term media activities as well as rapid response.  The Director will report directly to the President and CEO, be part of the senior leadership team, and work closely with all staff.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Proactively, creatively and quickly identifying and responding to breaking and daily news where Better Markets can shape and impact the news story, public debate, regulator deliberations and policy decisions.
  • Proactively pitching print, TV, radio, etc., stories, and monitoring the news as it relates to economics, finance, financial reform and Better Markets’ work.
  • Managing relationships with outside vendors, including publicists, ad agencies, web developers, social media specialists, etc.
  • Ownership of the entire communications operations.
  • Planning and executing the overall communications strategy that promotes Better Markets and its work across various media outlets including television, radio and print, and the entire online realm of websites, blogs, wikis, social media and related platforms.
  • Responding to media inquiries and drafting press releases, media advisories, articles, opinion pieces, newsletters and blog posts, as well as producing or facilitating the production of videos and other media that highlight Better Markets’ work.
  • Cultivating and maintaining Better Markets extensive existing media relationships while broadening and expanding them, including with digital media outlets and professionals.
  • Working with the Development Director and other team members to create, maintain and update Better Markets’ development and marketing collateral materials.
  • Developing new approaches to utilize Better Markets’ communication tools (website, social media, press releases, blogs, etc.) in proactive strategic ways.
  • Ensuring Better Markets’ website is a dynamic source for information that optimally presents and explains our work.
  • Planning and implementing events.
  • Tracking communication priorities and accomplishments and measuring the effectiveness of communications activities and efforts.
  • Maintaining and updating media distribution lists.
Qualifications:
  • A highly successful track record in a face-paced communications environment, including day-to-day communications strategy and tactical implementation and execution of rapid response and longer-term strategic communication planning and evaluation.
  • A minimum of 7 years of multifaceted communications experience, including extensive pitching and media relations.
  • Exceptional writing skills, including making complex subjects understandable and crafting nuanced messaging. Experience in writing a variety of forms, including on-line news pieces, breaking news press releases, talking points, longer-form debate-shaping pieces, short-form tweets, Facebook posts, etc.
  • Ability to think creatively about how to effectively engage the media, the general public, and the legislative, regulatory and policy community.
  • Superior organizational skills, including the ability to work effectively and collegially under tight deadlines and pressure while handling multiple projects simultaneously and being nimble and flexible in prioritizing and managing the work flow.
  • Obsessively detail oriented with strong oral communication skills, relationship building and “people” skills.
  • Track record of taking initiative, creative development, working independently and fostering a collegial work environment.
  • Tech-savvy with hands-on experience with website management and social media outlets, as well as ability to manage a contact database.
  • Experience in finance and/or banking/finance policy and research and/or familiarity with the Dodd-Frank Act is preferred but not necessary.
  • Experience supporting an organization’s development efforts also preferred.
  • A great sense of humor and a passion for the public interest.
